Cute Aggression

This painting started a breakthrough for me with my art. I finally began to be the director of my own work and was able to confidently make decisions I had never been able to make before.

Cute Aggression is a painting of my cat, Meeksly, that won Best of Show at Pensacola Christian College in May, 2024.

oil on canvas, 11x14

it started with an idea

It all begins with an idea. This painting is from a photo I took of my cat while he was sunbathing on a recliner.

Once I saw the beautiful light and shadow on him with the transparent pink of his ear, I knew I had to paint this moment. I started with a digital study to decide which colors and areas I wanted to emphasize.

rough beginnings

each painting begins with a simple sketch to layout basic, compressed shapes. Accuracy is key.

the many faces of Meeksly

during this painting Meeksly’s face had to be repainted multiple times in order for it to perfectly resemble him. From left to right is the order that the faces were painted in. Repainting the face helped add a beautiful texture to this painting and increased the believabilty.

completed painting

the final touches of the whiskers and bright highlights were added to complete this painting.
